Why earthing systems are the backbone of electrical safety

Earthing — or grounding — is the deliberate connection of the metallic parts of an electrical installation to the general mass of the earth. A correctly designed earthing system safely dissipates fault currents, stabilises voltage during normal operation and provides a reference point for the entire installation.

Without reliable earthing, fault currents can flow through unintended paths — including people. This is why IS 3043 and IEC 60364 mandate specific earth resistance values for different installation classes.
