Selecting the right earthing electrode depends on soil resistivity, fault current magnitude, service life expectations and installation constraints.
Chemical electrodes excel in high-resistivity soils thanks to their conductive backfill. Copper-bonded rods offer the best balance of conductivity, mechanical strength and corrosion resistance for substations and telecom towers. Solid copper rods are preferred for sensitive electronics and aggressive soils.
For large grids — power plants, solar farms — a combination of plate, strip and rod electrodes connected in a mesh provides the lowest impedance path under transient conditions.
